Pelo Camp

Lodge style Remote, genuine and wild

For an adventurous, rustic safari

Eco-friendly with no permanent constructions; just canvas tents, picturesque scenery, tranquility, extraordinary sunsets and only five spacious guest tents – Pelo Camp is the place for the adventurous traveller who desires a classic, rustic Delta experience. The guides of Pelo Camp will leave you in awe of the small creatures and birdlife inhabiting the Delta. Opportunities to view Pel’s fishing owl in action, catching your own tigerfish (and releasing it back to its natural habitat), spotting the endangered IUCN “Red List” species (especially the wattled crane) – this is what a true Delta safari is about.

The five spacious guest tents are recently renovated and come with en-suite facilities that include an outdoor bucket shower and indoor flush toilet with a basin. A zipper door separates the sleeping area from the bathroom and each tent has a covered front veranda. The beds are comfy, the interiors fresh and light, and little details - like finding hot water bottles in your bed at night - will make your stay unforgettable. All tents are situated to provide ample private space, sheltered from each other by thick palm foliage. The main camp comprises a tented dining area and lounge under impressive wild date palms (eating a luscious, sweet date is a must try), jackalberry and Natal mahogany trees. There is an outdoor boma and a raised viewing platform built onto a long abandoned, ancient termite mound.

Activities at Pelo Camp

In keeping with its island setting Pelo Camp doesn’t have access to game drive areas. Activities include mokoro excursions in the open, shallow floodplains as well as boating and island walking. Let yourself slide through the water while listening to the peaceful sound of the river drifting by. Pelo is also set in one of the best areas for sitatunga and red lechwe sightings. Or go on a nature walk and re-awaken the explorer in you; learn survival tricks like making a fire with sticks or a snare-trap. Kick back at the swimming pool for a refreshing dip in the midday heat; a blissful spot where it feels like you are plunging between water lilies. Let’s not forget the food, even though Pelo Camp is a secluded paradise, the food is abundant. Start your safari-day with homemade muesli and muffins, dig in a delicious piece of pie during high-tea or nutritious salads for lunch, and spoil your rumbling belly with roast lemon chicken and thyme after an adventurous day. Genuine food, knowledgeable guides, mind blowing delta nature; this is a place with an African heart and soul.

Tripadvisor comments Pelo Camp

This camp was superbly run. Nothing was too much trouble, interiors were immaculate, the food was delicious and the hospitality was gracious and welcoming. On the wide decks overlooking the water, we sipped cocktails at sunset, watched hippo and fish eagles at breakfast, dipped into the refreshing pool and admired the glorious views. The 'tents' are very comfortable, with sliding doors and wooden floors. It was hilarious to spot a vervet monkey watching the outdoor shower with intense curiosity. (There is also an indoor shower if you require more privacy.) This is a special camp in a serene and beautiful location, ideal for water-based safaris by motor-boat or makoro on the delta. Thank you to Neuman and Reveille and all the team for making our stay such a memorable and enjoyable experience.

We arrived at Pelo Camp with a boat a nice transfer to reach the camp. The tents are great with indoor and outdoor showers overlooking the delta and surrounded by trees. I love the bright colour of the tents as they bring more life and looks modern. Comfortable beds with hot water bottles in your bed as It was a cold night . I like the open channels where we mokoro activities are done and the fact that mokoro is not done at one place where all the guest will go there for Mokoro. The camp its lovely for families or small group of friends travelling together. Management and staff were very friendly. I highly recommend Pelo Camp
