A soulful haven

Land on the private airstrip and be welcomed by the camp director, traditional songs and a refreshing cool drink: the perfect start for an even better stay. Located amidst 105.000 hectares of untamed African bush, in a private community concession bordering the southern section of Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, is luxurious, Stanley’s Camp. Situated on the southern tip of Chief’s Island, you can nestle yourself in your private hammock and enjoy expansive views over the surrounding seasonal floodplains (floodwaters usually arriving around June). This unique Delta-area changes over the seasons from lush green when the rain flows down the Angolan highlands, to dry savannah when the neighbouring Kalahari Desert tightens its grip on the terrain. Discover this land and it inhabitants by foot, traditional mokoro, during a game drive or let elephants guide you into their world (Elephants as a guide? Yes, more about that later).

Each of the eight canvas tents at Stanley’s Camp are individually designed but all have a classic and understated elegance that harks back to the explorers of the 19th century. The tents are raised on a wooden platform opening onto a private wooden deck with a hammock. Interiors feature en-suite bathrooms with toiletries, mosquito nets, ceiling fans and hairdryers. The camp is centered around a lounge- and dining area affording magnificent views over the Okavango Delta floodplains. Breakfast, lunch, high tea (before the afternoon game drive) and dinner are served at various locations during your stay, with private dinners arranged on request.

Activities at Sanctuary Stanley’s Camp

Just as sister-camp Baines Camp, Stanley’s Camp also works together with the Living with Elephants Foundation. Let orphaned elephants Jabu, Thembi and Morula show you their world – how they live, rip juicy green leafs from a tree, or splash themselves with clear Okavango Delta water. An everlasting memory, as these incredible animals leave their footprint in your heart. Throughout your stay, you will be awakened by a soft knock on the door and with the smell of fresh coffee or tea: time for the first game drive! Stanley’s Camp is located in a private concession, so vehicles are allowed to go off road, and game drives are in the early morning and afternoon (and this is the best place to spot tree climbing lions). Water crossing in a 4x4 jeep is also part of the adventure. For a more tranquil experience: poled mokoro (a traditional dugout canoe) excursions are a great way to discover the bustling life at the riversides and in the Delta-waters (plus: the most beautiful water lilies you will ever see). From water to standing with two feet on the ground; during a walking safari in the private concession, a skilled guide will show you the Okavango Delta from a different perspective; it is all about the small five and the amazing flora and fauna. After any safari activity, it is time to kick back in a comfortable chair. Have dinner around the boma, let pastry-chef Gao whip up her special coconut cake (a true foodie, nothing makes her happier than creating sweet delights), listen to the bird-cacophony while you read a book or plunge in the pool. Tomorrow will be another exhilarating day.

This camp gives you a true bush experience. Tents were private and very comfortable. The stillness of the night and the clear skies are special bonuses. Fun to share the camp with various animals that wonder through at their leisure, no game fences here. Food was great. Evenings spent watching "bush television", sometimes called a campfire and visiting about the days adventures. Guides were friendly and knowledgeable. We have to call this our favorite.

We just left Sanctuary Stanley's Camp after a magical stay. We were welcomed by around a thirty-voice choir as we pulled up. This camp is run by five local villages. They make all of the crafts in the gift shop, cook and serve the meals, pole the boats, entertain around the campfire, and clean spotless rooms. The general manager, Mel, is a gracious and relaxed host. The curio assistant, Catherine, weaves many of the lovely baskets in the shop. Allen, one of the excellent drivers, also weaves beautiful baskets. Peter was our poler for the tiny dugout mokoro. Don't even think about visiting without booking The Elephant Experience!
